Facts about Gaustatoppen (1883m.)

Gaustatoppen, standing tall at 1,883 meters, is a prominent mountain in Telemark county, Norway, and is the tallest in the entire Vestfold og Telemark county. The mountain is not only a natural spectacle but also holds a significant place in terms of its geographical and historical context.

The peak, residing in Tinn Municipality and extending into Hjartdal Municipality, offers an expansive view, covering nearly one-sixth of Norway’s mainland, making it a popular destination for hikers and tourists. The summit, accessible on foot during the summer via a rocky pathway, is known for its medium difficulty, although certain areas, particularly the southwestern side, are considered dangerous and inaccessible.

Adding to its historical intrigue, Gaustatoppen houses a military installation, a remnant of its strategic importance during the Cold War. A lift, which was a well-kept secret until after the Cold War, runs inside the mountain, transporting supplies and personnel to the peak. This installation is no longer of military significance and there are plans to open it for tourists.

For climbing enthusiasts, Gaustatoppen presents a well-traveled path to the summit, offering a blend of scenic beauty and physical challenge. The path, easy to locate and travel, winds up the east flank and continues with several switchbacks up the southern pillar. While the climb is generally not steep or precarious, caution is advised, especially in foggy conditions near the summit. The climb is estimated to take about 3 hours upwards and 1-1.5 hours to descend.

The area is not just famous for its hikes but also for ice climbing, particularly in the nearby ice-climbing paradise of Rjukan, recognized as one of the world’s top destinations for the sport. The ice climbing season peaks in winter, a time when accommodations in Rjukan might be hard to find due to the influx of climbers.

For those planning to climb Gaustatoppen or explore its surroundings, it’s essential to consider the local camping regulations and respect the natural and historical significance of this majestic mountain
