Glittertind, also known as Glittertinden, is a majestic mountain in Lom municipality, Norway. It is the second highest mountain in Norway, towering at 2,452 meters high. Located in the Jotunheimen massif within the Jotunheimen National Park, Glittertind is surrounded by several other notable mountains. Despite being a contender for the title of Norway’s highest mountain, Glittertind was eventually surpassed by Galdhøpiggen due to a dispute over whether the glacier on its summit should be classified as part of the mountain or not. The mountain is easily accessible from the Spiterstulen hut in the west and from the Glitterheim hut in the east. The hike to the top is very popular, and visitors can experience unique views and impressions. Although there used to be a cabin on the summit, it was toppled by a storm and landed on the Grjotbreen glacier. The mountain is named after the river Glitra, which comes from the verb glittere, meaning “to shine” or “spark”.
