Torghatten is a mountain on the island of Torget, southwest of Brønnøy municipality in Nordland. Its height is 258 meters above sea level. The mountain is known for its signature hole that runs right through the mountain. This hole, 160 meters long, 35 meters high and 20 meters wide, was created during the Ice Age. The ice and water struggled to dig into the loose rocks, while the harder rocks at the top of the mountain resisted.
Torghatten is a popular tourist destination with an average of around 100,000 visitors each year. The walk to the hole is on a well-prepared path and takes about 20 minutes. If you go up one side, down the other side and around Torghatten, it will take about 1 hour.
The mountain derives its name from its location on the island of Torget (Torg-) and that it may resemble a hat(s), i.e. i.e. Torghatten. Torghatten is included in the legend of the Seven Sisters. There is a legend about Torghatten that says that Vågakallen had to shoot arrows and bows at Lekamøya. Then Skarsfjellgubben took off his hat and threw it at the arrow. Pila went over the cap and landed on the field.
in 1988 May 6 the so-called “Torghatten accident” occurred when a Dash 7 plane from Widerøe crashed into the mountains en route from Nams to Brønnøysund. All 36 people on board died, making it one of the worst accidents in Norwegian civil aviation (2021).
