Ascend the Majestic Gaustatoppen 1883 m.o.h in Telemark, Norway

Gaustatoppen (1883 m. or 6177ft) rises majestically above Rjukan, and is referred to by many as Norway’s most beautiful mountain. The top is easily accessible and easy to climb, but still offers southern Norway’s widest view. From the top, in clear weather, you can see approximately one sixth of Norway.

Every year, more than 120,000 people climb the mountain, which with its characteristic white-striped, elongated ridge is visible from large areas in southern Norway. The easy accessibility from central parts of Eastern Norway also helps to make the peak a popular hiking destination.

There are many ways to Gaustatoppen, also there are also many possibilities for accommodation in the area. Tuddal and Gaustablikk are the closest, but Rjukan also offers many nice places.

The summit is easiest to reach from the road between Rjukan and Tuddal. From the car park at Stavsro by Heddersvatn, it takes just under three hours to go up and two hours down at a normal pace. The height difference is approximately 700 metres, but the path up is wide and clear. Rocky, especially at the end, so it’s best to wear hiking boots. As you get closer to the top, the view gets better and better, and you can see the mountains of Telemark, Buskerud and Oslomarka in the distance. Just before the summit, you come to the Gaustatoppen Turisthytte (1850 m.a.s.l.) where there is food and the possibility to spend the night (book in advance). Here you can also go to the toilet, which can be paid for by card. The last stretch north of the ridge offers great views in all directions, not least over the Hardangervidda which spreads out to the north-west. The trip to Gaustatoppen is a family-friendly peak trip that is suitable for fit children who are used to hiking.
