SummitClimbs Field Note: Hermannsdalstinden (1,029 m; 1,026 m in Norwegian sources) is the highest mountain on Moskenesøya and in all of western Lofoten, rising about 6.5 km west of Reine in Moskenes. It is not Lofoten’s highest peak overall; that is Higravtindan (1,148 m) on Austvågøya. It is, however, a big, serious day out. Most people use the Munkebu hut, reached by a marked trail from Sørvågen, as a base, and from Munkebu the round trip to the summit takes about 6–8 hours on a partly marked route.
The Roof of Western Lofoten
Hermannsdalstinden stands on the west side of Moskenesøya, the island at the far end of the Lofoten chain. It has remarkable isolation: the nearest higher mountain is Kråktindan in Steigen, 86.5 km away, one of the 20 longest such distances in Scandinavia. That isolation is what makes the summit view so open, across the peaks of Moskenesøya and out over the sea.

Munkebu: Your Base Camp
Munkebu, Lofoten Turlag’s hut on Moskenesøya, is surrounded by steep mountains and is a popular destination in itself, as well as a starting point for both short day hikes and longer mountain trips. It is reached by a marked trail from Sørvågen, with paid parking at the trailhead. The hut is simple, with no running water or electricity and 6 beds. It has its own key (a standard DNT key will not work), which is collected and returned at the Matkroken shop in Sørvågen. Booking is digital through DNT’s hut booking, up to 14 days in advance; at least one person in the group must be a DNT member. Bring a sleeping bag or liner, and leave the hut clean and tidy. It is not open for day visits or drop-ins.
Climbing Hermannsdalstinden
From Munkebu, a partly marked route leads to the summit, a round trip of about six to eight hours. This is high, steep and exposed Lofoten terrain where the weather can change quickly, so it is for experienced mountain hikers in good conditions. Carry a map and compass as well as a phone or GPS, start early, and turn back if cloud or wind builds.
The SummitClimbs Take
Hermannsdalstinden is the summit of Moskenesøya: a night at Munkebu, a long, demanding day to the top and one of the widest views in Lofoten. Book the hut well ahead, pick a settled forecast, and pair it with an easier day on Svolvær’s Goat, admired from below.
