SummitClimbs Field Note: Segla (639 m) has become the symbol of the wild mountains on Senja’s outer coast: a sharp fin of rock that drops about 600 m straight into Mefjorden above the fishing village of Fjordgård. It is a short but steep hike: about 4.6 km there and back, around 3.5 hours and 588 m of ascent, graded demanding, from May to September. The view from the top over the fjords and peaks of northern Senja is spectacular, but the final ridge has loose sand and gravel, so watch your footing and the people behind you.
Senja’s Signature Peak
Segla rises above Fjordgård, a small fishing village on the west side of the entrance to Ørnfjorden in Senja Municipality, Troms. In recent years Fjordgård has become a well-known destination thanks to the spectacular mountains around it, above all Segla, Barden and Hesten. The village even has a literary claim: two of Karl Ove Knausgård’s novels, Ute av verden and Min kamp 4, take place here. If you plan just one summit on northern Senja, many hikers would tell you to make it Segla.

The Route From Fjordgård
From Finnsnes, cross the Gisund bridge to Senja, turn left straight after the bridge towards Senjahopen, then right towards Fjordgård after Mefjordvatnan. The path is clearly signposted from the centre of Fjordgård. From the start at the school, signs point towards Segla and Barden. Follow the forest road up towards Storvatnet to a junction, where the path to Segla is signposted again. From there the path climbs steadily to the shoulder, with a fantastic view out over Mefjorden. Then comes a steep climb up the ridge to the summit. There can be a lot of loose sand and gravel here, so take care not to kick stones down onto hikers below you. Those who dare to look over the edge from the top see 600 m straight down into Mefjorden. Return the same way.
Make It a Bigger Day
The Segla hike is short enough to combine with neighbouring Barden (659 m): a longer tour of about 8.6 km and 6 hours links the two along the ridge. Hesten, the other famous peak above Fjordgård, is a shorter, steeper ascent that starts up the same road.
Before You Go
- Loose ground: the steep final ridge is gravelly; keep spacing with other groups.
- Edges: the summit drops 600 m to the sea; stay well back, especially in wind.
- Crowds: Fjordgård is popular; use the marked parking.
- Midnight sun: in summer the light lasts all night, a classic time to climb.
